PACKET CAPTURE - FORENSIC ANALYSIS - NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS
Distributed applications have complex interactions with the networks over which they run. These interactions can have unexpected and undesireable consequences for mission critical transactions. Diagnosing these issues can be time consuming and require expert knowledge of multiple layers of communication.
Omniscience will provide a platform to investigate the network at varying levels of detail. We aim to give real time:
- loss,
- delay,
- bandwidth and;
- other connection related statistics
…to allow operators to find the source of failures without needing to have expert knowledge of the communication protocols being used.
Omniscience will also provide the operator with continuous packet capture of the network so that, in the case where the failure requires further investigation, all network level information is preserved.
Further reading
Network hardware (routers, firewalls, NAT boxes, load-balancers etc) can interact with high layer protocols in undesirable ways. The logs from these devices are often either unavailable or insufficient to detect the source of the problems. Packet traces are a snapshot of exactly what data was on your network, meaning that you are not dependant on partial information sources.
Packet traces provide a trustworthy view of your network. This allows forensic analysis, meaning that you can actually discover the source of problems that traditional log-based monitoring would not be able to resolve.
In the arena of network security: packet traces can be used to discover how an attacker compromised a network, and can also allow the recreation of their session, in-depth analysis of what they did and how they did it.
Omniscience will also provide the ability to objectively verify Service Level Agreement (SLA) related network measurements, such as loss and delay, and assist in auditing processes.
