AJAX INLINE EDITING - XML FEEDS
The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University have recently updated their website. As a part of the redevelopment, they wanted three completely new feathers:
- staff profile management – allowing staff to maintain their own profiles
- taught-course publishing – feeding off the University’s central databases to automatically publish course and module details
- phd managemnt – allowing registration and publication of phds being undertaken within the department
- short-course publishing – feeding off the University’s central short-course database to automatically update and publish short-course details on the website.
ADL Consulting were asked to develop this functionality for them. We developed a system that regularly takes XML feeds of the Departments programme related modules from the University’s central database. This data provides the foundation for the system. We then built a programmes database, associating the modules to the programmes, and allowing administrators to maintain the programme content.
We then developed the staff profile managment system. Integrating some rather nice AJAX scripting, the staff profile system allows department staff to very simply manage their profiles, and keep them up to date. The system then magically takes care of all of the static page generation for use on the University’s main website.
